For your information
Course Dates: Wednesday evenings from September 24th – December 10th, 2013.
- There are 12 weeks included in the course
- Time: 7-9 pm
- Location: First Unitarian Ottawa – 30 Cleary Ave
- Cost: $200 for all 12 weeks or $20 per session
Content covered: Rudimentary Theory, learning to sight sing, understanding solfege, reading and writing music notation, singing in tune without accompaniment.
Join Jacob Caines, the Music Director at First Unitarian Ottawa, to hone the skills used while singing in a choral group, playing in a band or orchestra, or even learning piano. Being able to sing and understand a melody written on the page without having to hear it played for you first greatly improves the speed with which you can progress in an ensemble. By improving your theory and sight reading skills, you will be able to tune more accurately, learn pieces and songs faster than before, and understand the music you are performing on a deeper level.
The course is designed so that each week the group will learn a new theoretical concept and then sing that concept to fully understand it. For those people with some music training already, there is the option to pay by the week and only attend the sessions you like. If you already know basic theory, you may want to wait to join until the third week! Each week will include a take home assignment to be brought back the next week. This is not so that people will get a grade, but so that the course can focus on where the students need more attention! The course will be a warm and welcoming space for people to learn and have fun with music theory and singing. The course will be as far from stuffy and boring as is possible!
